We investigate the morphologies and velocity fields of spiral galaxies in distant clusters (z ~ 0.5) focussing on signatures from interactions. Structural parameters and peculiarities are determined with HST/ACS images. To derive the internal kinematics and rotation curves we have performed 3D–spectroscopy allowing the construction of the full velocity field for each galaxy. Combining both approaches, transformation mechanisms are revealed that affect not only the stellar populations but also the mass distribution. The observations are supported by N-body/SPH simulations of different interaction processes.

We investigate the near-infrared K-band evolution of early-type galaxies in the cluster of galaxies Abell2390 at z = 0.23. Using the Omega-Prime camera at the 3.5-m Calar Alto telescope deep imaging (texp = 53 min) over a 6' × 6' field has been obtained. The measured K-band magnitudes of 28 galaxies are combined with the spectroscopic and morphological data of Fritz et al. (2005) to construct the Faber-Jackson and Fundamental Plane relations in the NIR. By comparing our distant galaxies to a local sample of cluster ellipticals (Pahre 1999), we find on average a mild luminosity evolution for both scaling relations (ΔMK ~ 0.6 − 0.7 mag) compatible with passive evolution of the stellar populations.

We present a systematic investigation of the velocity fields of both isolated and interacting spiral galaxies in combined N-body/hydrodynamical simulations. Closely mimicking the procedures applied in observations of distant, small, and faint galaxies we extract rotation curves (RCs) and compare the results of the simulation directly to observations. Irregularities in the velocity field reflect disturbances in the gravitational potential of the galaxy. They can be used to trace the recent interaction history of a galaxy and give possible clues to the type of the respective interaction. In addition, identifying disturbances in the RCs is important for Tully-Fisher studies in order to accurately derive the maximum rotation velocity.

Most of the galaxies in the local universe are located in groups, in particular in small groups, and most of the transformations suffered by galaxies located in today's clusters are likely to have occurred in groups at higher redshifts. Understanding the formation and evolution of groups is essential to understand the whole picture of structures and galaxy build-up. Using multi-band photometry we studied the intragroup light component (IGL) observed in compact groups of galaxies in a subsample of Hickson's catalogue, an efficient tool for determining its stage of dynamical evolution and for mapping its gravitational potential. Applying the OV_WAV package, a wavelet based technique, we can identify the IGL independently of the main contaminating effects. The fractions of IGL detected range from 11% to 46%, with one group with no IGL detected. The colors are consistent with those for old stellar populations and the mean surface brightnesses range from 24.8 to 28.4 B mag arcsec−2. Using the IGL, along with other dynamical evolution indicators, we could establish an evolutionary sequence for our sample.

We present our project on galaxy evolution in the environment of distant rich clusters aiming at disentangling the importance of specific interaction and galaxy transformation processes from the hierarchical evolution of field galaxies. Spatially resolved MOS spectra were gained with VLT/FORS to analyze the internal kinematics of disk galaxies. First results are shown for the clusters MS 1008.1–1224 ($z=0.30$), Cl 0303+1706 ($z=0.42$), and Cl 0413–6559 ($z=0.51$). Out of 35 late-type cluster members, 13 galaxies exhibit a rotation curve of the universal form rising in the inner region and passing over into a flat part. The other members have peculiar kinematics. The 13 cluster galaxies for which a maximum rotation velocity could be derived are distributed in the Tully-Fisher diagram very similarly to field galaxies from the FORS Deep Field with corresponding redshifts. The same is true for seven non-cluster galaxies observed in the cluster fields. The TF-cluster spirals do not show any significant luminosity evolution as might be expected from certain phenomena specific to clusters. Contrary to that, the disturbed kinematics of the non–TF cluster spirals indicate ongoing or recent interaction processes.

The interdiffusion of Cu and Sn and the formation and dissolution of Cu-Sn precipitate phases have been examined for Cu(Sn) alloy thin films. Cu(Sn) films were deposited by electron beam evaporation in either a Sn/Cu bilayer or Cu/Sn/Cu trilayer film structure, with overall Sn concentrations from 0.1 to 5 atomic percent. Analysis by in situ resistivity, calorimetry, electron diffraction and x-ray diffraction measurements indicates that the bilayer and trilayer films form the intermetallic phase η-Cu6 Sn5 during film deposition. Upon heating, the ε-Cu3Sn phase forms at 170°C, then this phase dissolves into the Cu matrix at approximately 350°C. Finally, ζ- Cu10Sn3 phase forms and precipitates after heating to 500°C and cooling to room temperature. The final resistivity of Cu/Sn/Cu films with more than 2 atomic percent Sn was greater than 3.5 μΩ - cm. However, resistivities from 1.9 to 2.5 μΩ - cm after annealing were obtained with Cu/Sn/Cu films containing less than 2 atomic percent Sn.
